How to use HeinOnline to find more of what you want

This step-by-step guides shows you how, once you've found one useful article in HeinOnline, you can use that as a stepping stone to finding other useful articles. You'll understand features like author links, citation tracking and the "More like this" tool.

Use the search box to search for your topic

If you've found something useful, you may wish to see what else the author(s) wrote. Note how the author names in the results list are links. Click on the name of an author you're interested in.

A new page will open up, showing other articles in HeinOnline written by that author. Click on the title of any of these articles to read it.

To the right of each article in a results list, you'll see the number of times it has been cited (i.e. referenced) by other articles. There's a good chance those citing articles are on similar topics to the original result. To see a list, click on the 'cited by' link next to an article.

A new page will open up, showing all the articles in HeinOnline that cite your original result. Click on the title of any article to read it.

For the next two examples, you'll need to open up an article. To do this, click on its title in the results list.

Down the left hand side, you'll see a list of all the other articles published in this journal in this year. Some journals publish articles on a broad range of legal topics, where some are more specialist. If your article is from a more specialist journal then there could be other relevant articles in this volume so try scrolling down this list.

Click on the "More like this" button above your article. This is the one with the circular plus icon.

HeinOnline will pick out six "interesting words" from your article, weight them according to how frequently they occur in your article, then give you a curated results list of other articles containing the same words in a similar ratio.

You can use the horizontal sliders to adjust the weighting of a word. You can delete a word if it doesn't seem relevant to you. Having deleted a word, you can add a replacement in the 'enter new term' box, if you wish. Once you've made any of these changes, click 'submit' on the left and your results list will adjust accordingly.

Remember: you can use any of these techniques at any point. So, if you find an article through 'more like this' rather than through using the search box, you can still look up the author, click on the citation count etc.
