How to use folders to save documents for later in Westlaw

This guide shows you how to save cases, articles etc for later in Westlaw. You automatically have a folder with your name on, so you can save research in there. Or you could create sub-folders, maybe one per module or per assignment. You'll also learn how to add notes to saved items, and how to quickly find your saved items in future.

1. Saving multiple items for later

Start from any search results page in Westlaw.

Tick a box next to any item(s) you want to save for later

Alternatively, you can quickly tick everything by choosing "Select all items in result list" at the top of the list

After ticking your item(s), click on the tabbed folder icon at the top right of your results list.

You can quickly save to "\[your name\]'s research" by selecting this and clicking "save"

To create a new folder, click on "New Folder"

Give your folder a name and click "OK"

Your new folder should now be highlighted in your list. Click "save"

2. Saving individual items for later

When you are looking at any case/journal article/Act etc on Westlaw, look down the right hand side to see a column of icons. Click on the tabbed folder icon.

Select the folder you want to save this item in, or click "new folder" if you'd prefer to create a new folder.

Once you've selected the folder, click "save".

3. Retrieving your saved items later

From every page in Westlaw, you'll see this menu bar along the top. Click on "folders".

Click on the name of any of your folders to see what's inside it.

If you want, you could add a note to a folder, for example saying what these items are about and why you thought them worth saving.

Within a folder, you can also add notes to individual items.

To do something with an item from a folder, tick the box to its left

After selecting an item, use the row of icons on the right to: download, print, email or delete that item.
