Learn how to efficiently structure your course content by creating new modules and submodules within Brightspace. This guide covers adding existing discussion boards and uploading supplementary documents to ensure your materials are organized for students.

Brightspace with the Classic Content Experience.

This button is where the toggle to New Content Experience will be.

Click "Turn it on"

You can see how condensed the navigation is on the left side of the screen, everything is much more visually organized and nested appropriately. To add a new module you will click the "New Module" button.

This screen should look familiar, you are simply creating your module. Give it a name, a description, add a photo, whatever works for you.

Don't forget to double-check that your module isn't hidden from learners.

Click "Save and Close"

Our new module is created at the bottom, and we can click and drag it into position. Click and drag the extended tab on the left of the module to drag it into position.

We are now going to move on to adding some content to our module, we'll start with adding some existing content that we had imported from our previous shell.

The add existing screen is no longer a drop down menu, it is a larger page where you can pull in your existing activities.

In this example we will add an existing Discussion from our course.

The two forums we have in our class. We will choose "Class Community Introductions".

Here is the actual Topic within that Forum, this is what will be linked into your Content area.

You can see our Discussion Post is added in-line within Content. New Content Experience pulls in the description of the Discussion and instructions and displays them in-line for learners and instructors.

We will now look at creating new content. Click on "Create New".

You can create a brand new Assignment, Quiz, Discussion, etc. right from this screen. This isn't new, as you could do that in Classic as well. But, I do want to show off the New Submodule option if you want to add even more organization to your courses.

Just like creating a Module, you will see a familiar screen where you can title the Submodule and add a description.

Ensure your new Submodule isn't hidden.

Click "Save and Close"

You can see our Submodule was created. We can click on the extended tab to the left to click and drag it anywhere into position.

I've moved the Submodule above the Discussion post.

Collapsing the Primary Module will condense everything into the module.

Click the arrow again will expand the list. However, your Submodule can be expanded as well. We'll do that next by adding some content to the new Submodule.

We'll go back to Add Existing and bring in a file from our computer to add to the course.

You can drag and drop your file into the large rectangle or click the "browse" button to open your file manager to bring in files.

Not captured is me going through my file manager and locating a file that I would like to add to the course. In this instance I added a Word document that has screenshots in it of the NCE view on mobile.

Let's say you want to add a description to this file, or edit it someway. Click the three dots next to the navigation arrows to see a drop down menu of options.

Click "Edit"

Click here.

We've typed up our description. Unhide content if needed and Save and Close.

You can see the brief description is visible at the top of the file now.

This arrow will collapse or open the description. A great addition so that learners can focus on your content once they have read the description.
