PowerStore Manager Monitoring

In this module, you will be viewing the monitoring features of the PowerStore system such as: Performance Metrics, Alerts, Jobs, and Service options.

Review Performance Metrics

Your first destination in PowerStore Manager is the Performance page. Here, you can view performance data about the system and its storage resources.

If you are starting the lab with this section, you will have to first login to the PowerStore Manager. Double-click **PowerStore** on the desktop. Login to PowerStore Manager with the following settings: - User: **admin** - Password: **Password123!** Click **"Log In"**

From the **Dashboard**, navigate to the **"Performance Dashboard"** page

The **Performance Dashboard** provides the end user with predefined charts and durations. Below is a list of the predefined charts and durations: - View: **Summary, Bandwidth, IOPS, Latency, IOSize** - For: **Last hour, Last 24 hours, Last 1 month, Last 2 years** You can see on the **Summary** view on the main **Dashboard** that multiple different metrics are shown by default like **Latency, IOPS, Bandwidth, and Alerts** all on one chart for easy comparison. Click **"View"** drop-down menu and select **IOPS**

Hover the mouse over the line graph on the chart. Notice that the values for all selected metrics at that point in time are displayed.

Deselect **Total IOPS** and **Write IOPS**

Notice that the graph automatically readjusts based on the selected metric values. It also makes it easier to focus in on certain metrics.

Now try zooming in on a particular section of the graph by clicking and dragging on the chart.

Notice how the graph zooms in for that particular time. When done click **Reset Zoom**

PowerStore Performance metrics view allows the user to select and deselect specific metrics for review. These metrics include Latency, Total, Read, and Write IOPS and Mirror Write metrics. These Metrics can be view at multiple levels: Cluster, Appliance, and Resource levels. Feel free to explore

To change the time frame, we can click the **"For"** drop-down menu and select **Last 24 hour**

Notice that the last 24 hour of metrics are now shown on the performance graph. There are additional performance metrics available throughout PowerStore manager depending on the resource selected. For example, in the details page of a given file system, the Performance tab will show metrics specific to the file system.

Let's take a look at the Hardware page for a specific appliance to see available metrics from that perspective. Navigate to **"Hardware > Appliances"**

On the **Appliances** page, click on the first appliance link **1000T-B**

In the **Appliance** details page, click on the **"Performance"** tab.

Lets change the layout. Click the **Layout** drop-down and select **Three columns**

With the three columns view we can easily compare the metrics, by hovering over the sections.

Change the **Timeline** to **Last 24 hours**. Notice that the metrics are updated to now show the last 24 hrs. You can continue to see the different categories available for the overall appliance's performance.

To view Metric specific to File for the Appliance, Click the **"File"** option. Notice that the file metrics are shown. You can continue to see the different categories available and change the layout to compare the metrics.

Review Alerts Page

The Monitoring page contains useful information about any errors, warnings, or notifications that are generated by your system as well as system events and job statuses.

In the top navigation pane, navigate to **"Monitoring"**

By default, the **Alerts** page is shown. Review any alerts that have been generated by the system. Note the severity that an alert can have. You might need to resize the columns to see the column names.

**Note:** The Alerts in your Lab environment may be different than the alerts in the screens below.

Acknowledging an alert changes the acknowledgment status of an alert, but does not delete it. Try it with the warning alert now. Select both of the warning alerts on the system called **"Appliance port pairs are connected to the same data switch"**\ \ Click **"Acknowledge"**

Click **"Acknowledge"**

The **Alerts** table will refresh and you'll see that the warning alert is no longer listed.

To see the acknowledged and cleared alerts from the system, you can filter by the Acknowledged and Cleared column. If the filters are not shown, click on the **Filter** icon above the table to the right.

In the corresponding option pane, Click **"Acknowledged: Unacknowledged"**

Select **"Acknowledged"** Click **"Apply"**

Notice that the warning alert that was acknowledged is now listed again in the table.

When an alert is no longer relevant to the system or is stale, the alert is cleared and not listed by default in the **Alerts** page. Click **"Cleared: Active"**

Select **"Cleared"** Click **"Apply"**

Notice that many more alerts are now shown in the Alerts page table. Seeing cleared alerts might be helpful in cases of troubleshooting to see if patterns of alerts keep appearing. Feel free to try filtering based on the other columns available.

Review Events Page

This lesson will focus on the Events page. Events provide information about changes to the system whereas Alerts are events that require attention and indicate there is a problem with the system. Let’s review events that do not rise to the level of an alert.

In the **Monitoring** page, navigate to the **Events** tab

On the **Events** page, you'll notice multiple events in a list.

In the event you want to hone in on a certain period of time and view events during that time period, you can utilize the **Timestamp** filter function. Try it out now. Click the **Filter** icon to show the Filters

Click "**Add Filters"** Select "**Timestamp"**

Click the **"Timestamp"** filter

Select the **All** drop-down and click **"Custom"**.

Select the **Equal to** drop-down and click **"Range"**.

Change the **From** field to two weeks prior (click on the clock/calendar icon and then the time to adjust the minutes) Keep **To** to today at 12:01 am. Click **"Apply"**

Notice that the table automatically updates to only show events from the range provided. Feel free to try other filter options.

Review Jobs

The jobs page contains information about any job that was started on the system - storage provisioning, configuration, etc. Use the Jobs page to check on successful and failed operations

While in the **Monitoring** Page, navigate to **"Jobs**" tab.

Review the **Jobs** page. Note the different columns of information available. Click the **"Filter"** icon.

Click **"Resource Action"**

Type **"Create"** in the search bar. **Note** the filter is case sensitive.

Select **"Create"** Click **"Apply"**

Here you can see all of the jobs that were created in the last week.

When ready to move on, click on the **"Export"** icon. Select "**Export Data in CSV"**

Choose a location to save the file. Then click "**Save"**. This download can then be used to review exported jobs and related information.

Like most tables in PowerStore Manager, the **Jobs** page has the capability to add/hide columns. Click the "**Columns"** icon

Select **"Duration"**

Notice that a new **Duration** column is added to the table with corresponding values. Feel free adding or hiding columns as you see fit.

When ready to move on, click on the **Column** icon again Select **"Reset Columns"**

You can see that the default columns are shown again which could be helpful to get back to a default state.

System Checks

The System Checks page enables you to initiate health checks on the overall system, independent of the system-issued alerts. You can launch a system check prior to actions such an upgrade, to be able to intercept and resolve any issues prior to upgrading the system.

While in the **Monitoring** page, navigate to **Health Checks** tab.

Review the **Health Checks** page. Review the entries in the table. Leave the **Profile** as **General** and select all check boxes. Click **"Run"**

Once the check completes, notice that the page refreshes with the results. **Note:** As this is an offline demo, notice that some failures are shown.

Data Collection

In the event an issue arises that requires Dell Support assistance, getting a service data collection is important to further troubleshoot and provide detailed logs for Support personnel.

In the top navigation pane to the far right, navigate to **"Settings"**

In the left-hand navigation pane, under **Support**, click on **"Gather Support Materials"**.

The **Gather Support Materials** page helps you collect and download detailed information about the PowerStore appliances in the cluster for troubleshooting. Click **"Gather Support Materials"**

In the **Gather Support Materials** pane that appears, enter the following settings for the data collect: - Description: **Demo_Data_Collect** - Collection Timeframe: **Last 24 hours** - Object Type: **Appliances** - Objects to collect data for: **1000T-B and 1200T-A** Click **"Start"**

Notice that a new data collection task starts with a status of **Running**. You may need to sort by **Start Time** for it to appear at the top

Once the data collection job is completed the status of the Support Materials will change to **Success.** In order to download the support materials, please select the package we just generated and click **Download**. This could be used to download the support materials and then send off to the Support personnel.
