PowerStore Migration

In this module, you will be viewing the process of PowerStore internal migrations via manual and assisted migrations.

Create a Manual Migration Session

You can migrate volumes and volume groups between appliances within a cluster. File-based storage resources are provisioned and managed only on the master appliance of a cluster.

If you are starting the lab with this section, you will have to first login to the PowerStore Manager. Double-click **PowerStore** on the desktop. \ Login to PowerStore Manager with the following settings: - Username: **admin** - Password: **Password123!**

In the top navigation bar, click on **Storage > Volumes** in the resulting drop-down menu

For this demo, let's assume that the first appliance in the PowerStore cluster is close to being full and the second appliance in the cluster has enough capacity and compute power to handle additional volumes. Let's try migrating a volume from one appliance to another.

If you don't see the Appliance column, simply add it using the Show/Hide Table Columns button on the upper right corner of the screen, next to the Show Filters button. Note you can adjust the columns widths as necessary.

Select the **ERP** volume from the list and notice that it's current appliance is the **1200T-A**.

Click **More Actions > Migrate**.

In the **Migrate** wizard, you can choose which appliance to migrate the selected volume to. In this case, there is one other appliance in the cluster. Click **Next** on the Initializing page after reviewing it.

Click **"1000T-B"** Click **"Next"**

Select **Defer Migration** Click **Finish** to complete the migration wizard

Before starting the migration, a pop-up warning message appears titled **Required Action for Migration.** Please note clicking the **Associated Hosts** button shows the hosts related to this migration. This is to check that the associated hosts have been rescanned prior to migration to ensure accessibility. For this demo, assume the hosts have been rescanned, click **"Start Migration"**

If applicable another warning message will appear titled **Rescan Hosts**. It states that associated hosts should have been rescanned prior to the migration to ensure that the storage being migrated is still accessible upon completion of the migration. Check the box next to **Yes, the associated hosts have been rescanned**. Click **"Continue"** If no host scan is required move to the next step.

You will get one last warning message stating that migration tasks might affect overall system performance. Click **"Migrate Now"**

Once the migration job task has started successfully, you will automatically be brought to the **Internal Migrations** page. Here you can see your new migration job **Synchronizing**.

After some time, the migration job will complete Notice that the **Status** changed to **Completed**. You can expand the column width if necessary to read all of the details.

Let's now navigate back to the Volumes page to verify that the **ERP** volume was successfully moved to the other appliance. Click **Storage > Volumes**.

Notice in the **Volumes** list that the **ERP** volume is now on **1000T-B**. Note you need to add the Appliance column to the table by clicking the Show/Hide Table Columns icon next to the filter icon, it's not enabled by default.

Create Assisted Migration Session

You have successfully created a migration session via manual migration. Now let's try initiating an assisted migration session.

Before moving to the next page, take note of the **Appliance** column and notice that alot of the volumes are on **1200T-A**.

In the top navigation bar, click on **Monitoring**.

In the **Alerts** tab, you can see in the table there is an error level alert stating **"The appliance A1 is projected to run out of space in 8 days"**. Click on the link for the alert to view more information about it.

In the **Alert** details pane, notice in the Next Steps section there are suggestions on how to resolve the alert including a link for an **Assisted Migration**. In this case, we will investigate the **Assisted Migration** process, click on the associated link.

In the **Assisted Migration** window, the system automatically gives recommendations for volumes that should be migrated to another appliance in the same cluster. You can also see there are other warnings in the window which provide additional information about the process and some suggestions for post-migration. This is just an example to walk you through the workflow and isn't a real world scenario. Review the list of storage resources that are recommended for migration by expanding the **"View Recommended Distribution."** Expand the columns as needed.

Click **"Next"**

Click **"Finish"**

Just like during the manual migration process, a warning message titled **Required Action for Migration** appears asking the user to ensure associated attached hosts have been rescanned. Click **"Start Migration"**

For the **Rescan Hosts** warning message, acknowledge that the associated hosts have been rescanned by checking the box. Check the box next to **Yes, the associated hosts have been rescanned**. Click **"Continue"**

You will then get one last warning message **Data Migration**. It states that data migrations can take varying amounts of time to complete and that they may have an impact on overall system performance. Click **"Migrate Now"**

Initiating the migration process will automatically bring you to the **Internal Migrations** page. Here you can see all of the migration sessions that have been initiated and can monitor the progress. Notice that the **Status** of most of the migration sessions is **Synchronizing**. After a couple minutes, click the refresh button if the table doesn't update automatically.

Here you can see the Status of the migration sessions changed to **Completed**.

Let's go back to the **Volumes** page and verify that the volumes moved to the other appliance successfully. Click **Storage > Volumes**.

In the **Volumes** page, take note of the **Appliance** column again and see that the volumes are now on **1000T-B**.
