PowerStore Thin Clones

In this module, you will learn about PowerStore Thin Clones and how they can be created and managed within PowerStore Manager for both volumes and file systems.

Create Thin Clone from Volume

Unlike a full clone, a thin clone is not a full backup of the original resource. Both snapshots and thin clones are space efficient copies that share data blocks with their parent object.

If you are starting the lab with this section, you will have to first login to the PowerStore Manager. Double-click **PowerStore** on the desktop. Login to PowerStore Manager with the following settings: - Username: **admin** - Password: **Password123!**

In the top navigation bar, click on **Storage > Volumes** in the resulting drop-down menu

Scroll down and click on the link for the **CRM - Customer Relationship Management** volume

Within the details of the **CRM - Customer Relationship Management** volume, click on the **Protection** tab.

Click **"Create Snapshot"**

In the Create Snapshot of Volume side panel that appears, use the following settings for the new Snapshot: - Name: **Snapshot_1** - Description: **This is a manually created Snapshot.** - Local Retention Policy: **No automatic Deletion** Click **"Create Snapshot**"

You can now validate that the Snapshot was created as shown.

Next, we will create a Thin Clone from the Snapshot. Select the **Snapshot_1** and click **More Actions > Create Thin Clone Using Snapshot**.

In the **Create Thin Clone** side panel that appears, use the following settings for the new thin clone: - Name: **CRM - Thin Clone Demo** - Description: **This is a new thin clone for demo purposes.** Leave the other settings as default, but notice you could change the **QoS Policy, Performance Policy**, add **Host Connectivity**, and assign **Protection Policy** all in the same process while creating the new thin clone. Note that all these different settings can be changed after the thin clone is created as well. Click **"Clone"**

Once the thin clone is successfully created, notice there is a message stating that to view the new thin clone you go to the volumes list. Click **Storage > Volumes**

Back on the **Volumes** page, verify that there is a new thin clone called **CRM - Thin Clone Demo** in the list.

Create Thin Clone from File System

Now that you've created a thin clone from a volume snapshot, next we'll try creating a thin clone from a file system.

In the top navigation bar, click on **Storage > File Systems** in the resulting drop-down menu.

Select the **Image_FS0** file system and click **Repurpose > Clone File System.**

In the **Create Thin Clone** side panel that appears, use the following settings: - Name: **Image_FS0-Thin-Clone-Demo** - Description: **This is a new thin clone for demo purposes** Click **Clone**

In the File Systems page, notice that a message appears stating a thin clone was created. Verify that the new **Image_FS0-Thin-Clone-Demo** was created successfully.
