Getting Started

In this guide, we'll go through how to create Shopify metafields, also known as custom fields. We'll also learn where these can be managed on the Shopify platform, as well as how to add these fields to your customers profile page and customer card, as well as registration form to start gathering information from your customers as well as displaying information to them. Before jumping into building these fields, we'll start with what's setup by default on your customers profile page and customer card. Below you'll see the profile page that by default, contains an editable first name and last name field. As well as a read only email field. You'll also see the profile card on the left, that gives a read only view of the customers first and last name, as well as their email address and default address.

This information is gathered from the customers account on the Shopify platform. If you head to your Shopify admin portal, and view the Customers tab, and select a customer. You'll see their first name, last name, email address and default address. This information is gathered, and displayed on the customers profile page.

How to create an upload/download File field

In the 'Name' field, name the field what you'd like for it to be called. For our example, we'll just call it 'Icon File' Click on the 'Select Type' button Select File

Choose between accept specific file types or accept all file types and click save

View and manage your new metafields

Once you've created new metafields, you'll see them against all customers on your Shopify admin portal. You're able to view the content customers submit, as well as edit this, submit your own content etc. This can all be done from the Customers tab inside of the Shopify admin panel. Below you'll see the metafields section has been populated with the newly built fields (with dummy data for this example image)

You'll now see the newly created fields, have all been added to the 'Manage Customer Data' section of the profile builder. These all have an edit button also attached will will link back to the Shopify metafield builder, for you to make any changes

Add fields to the Profile Page

Click "Allow customers to update their own details by easily adding and organizing editable fields in their profiles."

Click "Insert Field"

Click "Save"

Click "Continue Editing"

You can now see the fields that have all been added. These are now also able to be set into read-only mode if you'd prefer. By default they are set to editable, but can now be toggled to read-only

We can then test this as well by simply updating the content of the fields and clicking save

Which will update the content of the customers metafield against their account, in the Shopify admin portal

Add read-only fields to the customer profile card

Type "25OFF"

You could (for example) go back to the profile builder and add any other fields you've also created to the profile card and hit save

Adding Fields to the Registration Form (Widget Exclusive)

With Shopify moving toward (New) Shopify Accounts, and moving away from Legacy Customer Accounts, it has meant that Shopify has also moved away from providing a 'Registration Form/Page' for new customers and has opted for a new Sign in page with a one time email password. This does not require new customers to sign up, before they can access an account. They can simply use the one time password feature directly. Because of this, the C:Hub Customer Accounts app is no longer able to provide a dedicate 'Registration page' when using Shopify (New) Customer Accounts. However, we do provide a new method for users to still setup a registration form, on the 'Accounts Everywhere Widget'. If you have the Shopify (New) Customer Accounts active on your store, and the 'Accounts Everywhere Widget', you can also toggle on and use our widget registration form. Simply open the '**Customize > Profile Builder**' tab and scroll down to the: **Registration Fields Setup** section:

Just like the '**Customer Profile Setup**' and '**Customer Card Setup**', you're able to click the 'Insert Field' button to add your created fields, directly to the registration form. You'll also see that you can set the: **First Name** & **Last Name** (added by default) to **required** fields, if you'd like to ensure that these fields are filled in during the registration process. You'll also see the **Email** & **Password** fields (added by default) that are required fields, that cannot be removed:

Just like the '**Customer Profile Setup**' and '**Customer Card Setup**', you're able to select any additional fields you'd like to add. We'll add the birthday field in this example:

And insert the field

For this example, we also added the **Gender** and **Accept Email Marketing** fields. Once the fields you'd like to add, have been added, simply toggle on the '**Custom Registration Form**' and click **Save**.

With the custom registration form toggled on. You can open the accounts everywhere widget on your storefront, and while logged out of the customer account, you'll be able to see the new button: **New Customer? Sign Up here**

Once clicked, you'll be taken to the new custom registration form, directly inside of the accounts everywhere widget where customers can fill in the form and sign up.

If the 'Accounts Everywhere Widget' is toggled off, and your store is set to use Shopify (New) Customer Accounts. You'll be able to see a notice in the **Registration Fields Setup** section. Letting you know: ***Due to Shopify's shift to 'new' customer accounts and some limitations associated with it, the Registration Form is only currently available by using our Widget (or totally available for shops using Shopify Legacy Customer Accounts).***

Tip: While using Shopify Legacy Customer Accounts, toggling on the 'Custom Registration Form' will replace the default Shopify registration pages form. If you also have the 'Accounts Everywhere Widget' toggled on, the registration form will be available directly through the widget as well. The Accounts Everywhere Widget does not need to be toggled on, to use the custom registration form, on Legacy Customer Accounts.
