Navigate to [https://nmu.edu/sponsoredprograms/](https://nmu.edu/sponsoredprograms/)

Click "Cayuse"

Click "ACCESS CAYUSE"

Enter your single sign-on information, and click "LOGIN"

Click Products"

Click "Sponsored Projects"

Click "Start New Proposal"

Click "This proposal is not related to any existing proposals or awards (Create New Project)"

Enter a title.\ ***NOTE: This is not the official title; it is just for you to find it in Cayuse. We recommend using the title of the award and your last name.*** *(That will help us find it if we need to help you.)*

Click "Create New Project"

Don't worry about "Proposal Summary" - you can't enter data here, and it is for external grant applications.

You will need to answer questions in all Proposal Sections, starting with Preliminary Information.

Click "Internal NMU Award"\ ***NOTE: red asterisks denote questions you are required to answer.***

Click "Student Award"

Click in the "NMU Student Award Program" field and select your program.

When you answered all required questions in a section, the red circle with the number of yet-unanswered questions turns to a green check mark. It is complete. Click on the next section.

In the General Information section, answer all questions, select dates, and enter your official project title.

On the Personnel page, click under "Name," start typing your name; then, click on it when it appears.

***in the "Role" drop-down, select "EIE Applicant (Graduate Students Only)"***

The "Internal Association" drop-down will provide your department for you to select. (If "NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY" shows up instead of your department, click on that.)

Click under "Select the department in which you are seeking your EIE (where you will do your research)" and make a selection. ***This will route your application to the department head who will be asked to approve it.***

Click "Other Components" and answer all questions. "Yes" responses will open new sections with questions for you to answer.

***If your research involves Human Participants, you will need to have submitted an IRB application.*** If so, click "Yes." See below for details on the two "Yes" options.

***Human Participants (cont):*** If you clicked "Yes - Submitted through Cayuse" (most likely case), click the "Link to Human Ethic Studies" field, select PI, Study Number, or Title, and enter the information. A drop-down will give you options of studies that should include yours - select it.

**NOTE: It takes up to 24 hours after you submit a study in the Cayuse IRB platform before it appears in this link**

***Human Participants (cont):*** If you clicked "Yes - Submitted on Paper," provide the Study Number, Title, and PI in the appropriate field

***Human Participants (cont):*** If you have not submitted an IRB application, click "No." Then, click "Project is not reviewable by IRB" and explain why it is not reviewable in the space provided.

***If your research involves Animal Subjects, you will need to have submitted an IACUC application.*** Click "Yes."

***Animal Subjects (cont):*** Click the "Please list the IACUC application numbers" field and type the numbers. Then, attach your application form below (and approval if you have it).

***Animal Subjects (cont):*** If you have not submitted a IACUC application, click "No." Then, click "Exempt" and explain why your project is exempt in the space provided.

If you answered "yes" to the questions about research materials, intellectual property, or international components, answer the questions in the sections that opened up. (e.g. below: Research Materials opened up due to a "yes.")

The final section is "Summary, Attachments & Notes." Open it and read the instructions.

Enter a number for "Total funds requested." Then, upload your entire documentation in the upload field.\ **NOTE: It is preferable that you upload ONE PDF with all your documentation in it. If, however, you have difficulties, it is acceptable to upload separate PDFs.\ NOTE: Your documents MUST BE PDFs.**

Enter keywords that apply to your project (search terms that can be used to find your work), and select your field of study.

If you have any comments you wish to add to your proposal, add them. \ If you would like the comments to be included so that reviewers can see them, please note that fact.

When your proposal is complete (you have checked all your work and all your proposal's sections have green checkmarks), the "Route for Review" button will light up in blue. Click on it.\ **You have submitted your application!** It will be routed for review to the appropriate department head. (You can click the "Routing" tab below "Route for Review" to see that the proposal will be "pending" for the department head to approve.)
