Sending an SMS with Klaviyo Flows

Yes, you can trigger both SMS and MMS messages through Tall Bob using Klaviyo flows - and it’s easier than it looks. We’ll guide you through the setup step by step. The good news? Steps 1 and 2 only need to be done once. From there, Step 3 can be repeated for any new message in your flow. To keep things simple, close any extra tabs and just focus on the two that matter. Let’s get started!

Our friends at Klaviyo are in the process of updating their Flows Builder, so you might notice a slightly different layout than what’s shown below. Not to worry - the guide should still work for you. Part 1: Setting up your Klaviyo Flow

Start by opening your Klaviyo interface. You'll need to have first connected your Tall Bob & Klaviyo Accounts.

Let's start by navigating to [https://www.klaviyo.com/flows](https://www.klaviyo.com/flows)

Click the hyperlinked flow name to edit an existing flow, or select ‘Create Flow’ to start a new one from scratch.

When you're ready to add an SMS to your flow, use the 'Webhook' node (not the 'SMS' option). Simply drag and drop the 'Webhook' into the flow at the point where you’d like the SMS to be triggered.

Name your Webhook e.g. Abandoned Cart SMS #1

Tall Bob has introduced a new Webhook Campaign Builder that makes API payload creation simple. You can find the support documentation for the campaign builder [here](https://support.tallbob.com/support/solutions/articles/17000147873-webhook-campaign-builder-customer-guide).

Click the 'Destination URL' field and enter <https://api.tallbob.com/v2/sms/send> This is the same URL for everyone. Remember, you've already connected your unique APIs and webhooks.

Add the following inputs under Headers: 1. **Key:** Content-Type 2. **Value**: application/json

Click the 'Add Header' button and add the following input: 1. **Key:** Authorization

Part 2: Setting up the connection in Tall Bob

In a new tab, navigate to <https://app.tallbob.com/manage_api> If you log in using a saved link, you can get to Manage APIs using the gear setting in the top-right hand corner.

Click "Copy" next to the Basic Auth Header.

Return to Klaviyo and paste the code into the second "Value" field. You've done it. You've connected tech.

Part 3: Finishing Up in Klaviyo

Now, let's create your message!\ \ Click on the "JSON Body" section and enter the message you want to send.\ The formatting may look a little scary but it's not really.

The message format is simple and includes three key components: - **to:** The recipient of your message - **from:** The sender, such as your brand’s sender ID - **message:** The content you want to send Additionally, we use **"campaign_reference"** to help you track and report on any flow SMS, and **"shorten_urls"** to automatically shorten links within your message for cleaner delivery. It is highly recommended to use a **"reference"** value in the JSON body of the message. This will help Tall Bob provide a delivery receipt for contacts that don't have a contact ID. The value used for our contact search is\ "reference": "[[ person.email ]]"

Here's a **template** you can use to get started - {\ "to": " [[{{ person.phone_number }}]]",\ "from": "Sender ID",\ "message": "Hi, this is a test message sent via Klaviyo.\\n\\nShop Now: \[INSERT LINK\] \\n\\nStop: {OptOutURL} ",\ "shorten_urls": true,\ "campaign_reference": "name of campaign flow",\ "reference": "{{ person.email |default:'' }}"\ }

One important thing to know. Because this is JSON (#scary_codey_stuff), new lines work a bit differently here. - To start a **new line**, use one [[\\n]] in your message. - To add a **blank line** (a space between lines), use two [[\\n\\n]] in a row. If you’ve done any web design or HTML before, this will feel familiar!

At this stage, you are pretty much done! From here, you can either save your flow or continue building it out as needed. Before you go live, we strongly recommend testing your SMS to make sure it looks and feels exactly how you want. Below, we’ll guide you through how to do just that.

Assuming you're already a contact within Klaviyo, you'll be able to have that SMS hitting your phone in just a few moments - First Click "Preview" then "Search for a Profile" - Search for and select the contact you want to send a test to - Assuming they are found click "Send Test Request" to get things moving

Congratulations, you're there. Click "Save" and be sure to set any nodes to Live when you're ready to launch!

Part 4: Viewing the Message Status

Once the flow has been triggered, navigate to the profile of a customer to whom the campaign has been sent to view the Message Status

The status that represents a successful message send would be\ tb_message_sent\ tb_message_delivered

Part 5: Optional Parameters

Hang On... what about link shortening and all that jazz?

So, you want to include a link in your SMS message and have it shortened? Brilliant, we think it's great, and it's really easy to do. Simply, go back to that #scary JSON from earlier, and add one extra line:\ "shorten_urls": true,

Would you like to have a reference parameter in your campaign? Using a campaign_reference can help you report on how many messages you're sending in each flow. Simply add one extra line:\ "campaign_reference": "name of campaign flow". View our example JSON in the image below
