In this module, you will learn about Storage Direct, PowerStore's native integration with PowerProtect DD Series Appliances and how to manage Remote backups.

PowerProtect DD Remote System and Protection Policy

In this lesson we will explore the PowerProtect DD properties and create a new Remote Backup rule and add it to a Protection Policy.

If you are starting the lab with this section, you will have to first login to the PowerStore Manager. Double-click **PowerStore** on the desktop. Login to PowerStore Manager with the following settings: - Username: **admin** - Password: **Password123!**

In the top navigation bar, click on **Protection > Remote Systems** in the resulting drop-down menu

Under the remote system find the PowerProtect DD system in which we will use for remote backups

Select the PowerProtect DD Appliance and view its Capacity Details by selecting **More Actions > View Capacity Details**

Here we can see that the PowerStore is gathering and reporting the PowerProtect DD Series usage as well as Historical Usage between the current PowerStore Appliance and PowerProtect DD Appliance. Click **"Close"**

Next lets confirm that our PowerProtect Appliance is up to date by clicking **More Actions > Verify and Update** to verify our PowerProtect DD System's Management and Data Connections are valid.

Click **"Verify and Update"**

Once connections have been verified and updated, we can click our PowerProtect Appliance and click **Modify** to view the systems **Details** and **Connectivity** as well.

Click **"Block Connectivity"**

Under the **Block** **Connectivity** Tab you will find all of the Initiator IP Addresses for each Appliance in the PowerStore Cluster as well as the Node in which they belong to. This tab will also provide the PowerProtect DD Target address in which they are connected to as well as the connectivity status of the connection. Click **"Cancel"**

Next, navigate to **Protection > Protection Policies**.

Once on the Protection Policies page navigate to **Remote Backup Rules** in the left bar to create a new **Remote Backup Rule**.

Click **+ Create** under the Remote Backup Rules section to Create a new Remote Backup Rule

Use the below information to create the backup rule: - Name: **Demo PowerProtect Backups** - Destination: **PowerProtect-Appliance** - Days: **Leave as default** - Frequency: **Leave as default** - Retention: Set Keep For to **90 days**

Click **"Create"**

Verify the Remote Backup Rule was created.

Once the Remote Backup rules has been created, navigate to **Protection Policies** on the left hand bar to view all existing Protection Policies.

We are going to want to select our existing Policy called **ProtectionPolicy5** and Modify it. Click **"Modify"**

Modify **ProtectionPolicy5** to add our newly created Demo Remote Backup Rule Select **Demo PowerProtect Backups**

Click **"Apply"**

Our **ProtectionPolicy5** policy should now include a Snapshot Rule, Replication Rule, and newly created Remote Backup Rule.

Creating a Remote Backup Session and Retrieve Session

In this lesson we will assign a Protection Policy to a volume, manually initiate a backup and also retrieve a snapshot from the PowerProtect DD appliance.

In the top navigation menu, click on the **Storage > Volumes** to get to the Volumes page.

Select the following volume in the **Volumes** page: **SysEng-DB**. The volume you have selected does not currently have a protection policy assigned to it. This can be validated by checking that the Protection Policy column is blank. You'll now assign the new protection policy that you just created to the volume.

Click **Protect > Assign Protection Policy**

In the **Assign Protection Policy** side panel that appears, select the **ProtectionPolicy5** in which we just modified in the previous steps. Click **"Assign"**

An info message will appear confirming that the protection policy selected will be applied to the selected volume. Click **"Assign"**

In the top navigation menu, click on the **Protection > Remote Backup** to get to the Remote Backup page.

Select our backup Session by the name of **SysEng-DB** which is the backup session associated with our **SysEng-DB** volume.

To manually kick off a backup session we can select the session **SysEng-DB** Click **"Backup"**

Click **"Backup"**

Once you confirm and click Backup, the session will transition from a Status of **Idle**, to **Prepare**, to **In Progress** (shown below), back to **Idle**.

This will take a minute or two, you can click the Refresh button to see the progress

Once the session transitions through each of the mentioned status. We can navigate to back to the volume's protection tab. Navigate to **Storage > Volumes** Click Volume: **SysEng-DB**

Click **"Protection"** tab

Note that at this time the volume of **SysEng-DB** does not have any native snapshots associated with it under the **Snapshots** tab.

Navigate from the **Snapshots** tab to the **Remote Snapshots** tab to view all snapshots that have been taken by our PowerProtect Appliance. Click **"Remote Snapshots"**

Select one of the Remote Snapshots that has a Remote System of **PowerProtect-Appliance** and click the **Retrieve** button to trigger a retrieve operation. The retrieve operation start a copy operation of the Remote Snapshot back to the local PowerStore Appliance for use. Click **"Retrieve"**

Click **"Retrieve"**

Confirm that the retrieve session has been created

Use the navigation menu bar to navigate to **Protection > Remote Backup**

Once on the Remote Backup page, we can watch the retrieve session by navigating to the **Retrieve Sessions** tab

Under this section you will see any completed or In progress sessions.

Once the Retrieve Session for **SysEng-DB** has entered the Completed Status. We can navigate to back to the **SysEng-DB** volume's protection tab. Click **Storage > Volumes**

Click **"SysEng-DB"**

Click **"Protection"** tab

On the **Snapshot** section under **SysEng-DB** protection tab we should now see our newly retrieved snapshot from our PowerProtect Appliance.

Discovering Remote Snapshots

In this lesson we will show how one can use a PowerStores Global ID to discover and restore data to a separate PowerStore System using PowerProtect DD.

In the Navigation Menu Bar. Navigate to the **Settings** of the PowerStore Appliance in the right corner. Once in **Settings**, under **Cluster** Section in the left hand bar select **Properties** to view the PowerStore's Properties. In properties you will find the PowerStores **Global ID** in which can be used to discover Remote Snapshots. In the following steps we are going to show how one can use a PowerStores Global ID to discover and restore data to a separate PowerStore System using PowerProtect DD. Please take note of the PowerStore **Global ID** in NotePad

Once you have noted down the PowerStore's Global ID, use the Navigate Menu bar to navigate to **Protection > Remote Backup**

Once on the **Remote Backup** Page, select the **Resources** tab followed by clicking the **Discover Remote Snapshots**.

Once you click the Discover Remote Snapshots, the Discover Remote Snapshots wizard will appear. Under this wizard we are going to want to input and select the following: - PowerProtect DD Remote system: **Select our PowerProtect-Appliance** - PowerStore Global ID: **PS8e0f698575cf** - From: **Select anywhere from a day to weeks prior**. - To: **Leave as today(default)** Click **Next** and view all of the possible remote snapshots.

While in this lesson we are using the current PowerStore system's Global ID, In a live scenario you would be able to input a separate PowerStore system's Global ID in which is also using PowerProtect DD if desired

Select any one of the remote Snapshots in which you would like to discover and retrieve. Click **"Next"**

Once satisfied, click **Retrieve** to start a Retrieve session for the Remote Snapshots you selected.

Once the Remote Backup rules has been created, navigate to **Protection Policies** on the left hand bar to view all existing Protection Policies.

Use the navigation menu bar to navigate to **Protection > Remote Backup**

Once on the Remote Backup page, we can watch the retrieve session by navigating to the **Retrieve Sessions** tab

Under this section you will see any completed or In progress sessions.

Once the Retrieve Session for **SysEng-DB** has entered the Completed Status. We can navigate to back to the **SysEng-DB** volume's protection tab. Click **Storage > Volumes**

Click **"SysEng-DB"**

Click **"Protection"** tab

On the **Snapshot** section under **SysEng-DB** protection tab we should now see our newly retrieved snapshot from our PowerProtect Appliance.
