Tiles Block: Overview and Set Up

(Updated 11/19/24) This guide provides an overview of the Tiles block as well as steps to set one up on a Landing Page or within a Group

Adding a Tiles block to a group or landing page or editing a Tiles block that already exists requires advanced profile permissions.

The Tiles Widget holds the platform objects on a landing page and within a group. Objects include: 1. Resources 2. Lessons, Outlines and Projects made by curriculum tools within the platform 3. Collection 4. Groups 5. Courses created with the Course Tools *In this guide, we are going to walk thru the set-up of a Tiles Block.*

Adding a Tiles Block to Landing Page or Group

To add a Tiles Block to a Landing Page or Group do the following: **Landing Page** 1. Move the landing page into edit mode by clicking the pencil icon in the toolbar located on the right side of the page 2. Click the +Add Block located in the top left of the page 3. Select Tiles widget **Group** 1. Move the group page into edit mode by clicking the gears icon in the toolbar located on the right side of the page; select Manage Widgets 2. Click the +Add Block located in the top left of the page 3. Select Tiles widget

Set Up a Tiles Block

From the edit mode of your Landing Page or Group, *click* on the Tile Block you would like to configure. In the edit menu that displays on the right, you are going to start by Configuring your Tiles Block. *Click* on **Configure Tiles**

The **Search & Sort** section of Configure Tiles Block is where selections are made to identify the number of items that display in a block and the order in which they display. 1. *Select* number of objects you would like to have displayed 2. *Select* Sort By and make your selection **Note:** *if there are more objects in your tile then you select to have displayed, a 'view all' will appear on the block in the top right corner which will allows users to view all items in the tiles block.*

The **Search Filters section** of Configure Tiles block is where you are going to make selections to configure what is displayed within the Tiles Block. **Note:** Only the categories most pertinent to what you would like called into the Tiles block are selected. - **Object Types:** select all object types that should be called into the Tiles block. - **Group Types:** if one of the object types is Groups, then this is where the group types are selected that will be called into the Tiles Block. - **Collection Types:** If collections is an object type called into the Tile Block, specific collection types can be called into the group. - **Grades:** Identify the Grades of the objects that should be called into the Tiles Block. - *Note:* *this pulls from the grades tag on objects.* - **Subjects**: Identify the Subjects of the objects that should be called into the Tiles block. - *Note: this pulls from the subject tag on objects.* - **Resource Categories:** Identify the category of resource objects that should be called into the Tiles Block. - *Note: this pulls from the resource categories tag on resource objects.* - **Professional Roles:** Identify the category of professional roles that should be called into the Tiles Block - **Other Filters:** make the selection here as applicable - My Contributions - My Favorites - Shared with Me - Have Edit Rights - Shared with Public - Owned by Page Owner (user or group) - Shared with Page Owner (user or group) - Favorited by Page Owner (user or group) - Recommendation for Requesting User - Requesting User is Member or Leader in Group - Requesting User is Leader in Group

Tip! All Selections made will display at the top of the Main Section.

The **Filter by Collection** section of Configure Tiles block is where the collection is added IF a collection is going to feed the Tiles Block **Note:** *if a collection is going to feed the Tiles Block, then the selections in the previous step should not be made*

The **Filter by Owner** section of Configure Tiles block is where the objects are called into the Tiles Block based on owner of object.

The **Additional Actions** section of Configure Tiles block is where additional actions can be added to the Tiles Block such as: 1. Add a Resource 2. Add a Group 3. Add a Collection 4. Create and Share 5. Share with Page

The **Content** section of Configure Tiles block is where content can be added to display above and below the Tiles Block

Configure Tiles: Shared

The **Shared Tab** of the Configure Tiles section is where the following settings can be selected: 1. **Open links into a new tab:** When users open objects displayed within the Tiles Block, they will display in a new tab 2. **Open Resource URLs Directly:** if the objects within the Tiles Blocks are Resources added from outside sources, selecting this will move the user directly to the outside source (website) without first opening the Resource Landing Page (page within the platform that provides information about the Resource prior to the user being directed to the resource outside of the platform). 3. **Enable Carousel:** objects display as a carousel instead of a list or grid format 4. **Style:** display objects in either a grid or list format 5. **Items per Row:** number of items displayed in a row as applicable to either the grid or list format. 6. Items to Display on Object Tile: 1. **Show Title:** Title of object 2. **Show Contributor:** displays agency or person who contributed object 3. **Show type:** displays icon of object type 4. **Show Type name:** Displays object type (resource, group, collection, lesson, etc) 5. **Show Hover Actions:** when user moves cursor over object tile, the title, description and tags display in a pop up modal.

The **Fallback Tab** is the exact same settings as the main tab. This is used when you want a fallback to the selections made in the Main Tab. **Example:** - My Favorites which displays on a Registered Users Dashboard has a Main and a Fallback: - **Main:** display users favorited objects - **Fallback:** displays recommendations to users based on their profile UNTIL a user adds an object to their favorites. This was set up in this manner so that users would not have a blank block on their dashboard and seeing recommendations would increase initial engagement with the page and the platform.

Header Settings

The **Header Settings** is where: - **Header Title:** Title of the Block is added - *Note: if a title is not wanted, click the **Hide Header** selection* - **View All Label:** change 'view all' whichever terms are preferred - **Site Guide Information**: the information in this block then adds this step to the site tour available within the group or on the landing page where this block is displayed.

Style Settings

The **Style Settings** is where customized backgrounds and border colors can be added. The block always defaults to the platform default settings.

Visibility Settings

The **Visibility settings** is where the Tiles Blocks visibility is set. *Note:* *This does not change the permissions within the block. The permissions within each object need to be set as applicable to the permissions desired.*
